Thanks to Pandit Rajan - Sajan Misra, Indian classical music will now resound in the Doon Valley. The brothers have established a beautiful gurukul in Dehradun by the name of 'Viraam'. The Mishra brothers are part of a 300-year old lineage of khyal singing of the Banaras Gharana. They were born and brought up in Varanasi and received musical training from their grandfather, Bade Ram Das Ji Mishra, and also their father, Hanuman Prasad Mishra. The brothers have performed all over India and the world for many years. They were awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2007, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award jointly in 1998 and the Gandharwa National Award for 1994-1995.

Their residence and Gurukul in Dehradun called Viraam is scenically located overlooking the valley. Viraam means stop or rest. This signifies many things. One of them is that this place will offer a rest from the musical trash being junked out these days and offer music in its purest form. Monthly baithaks (concerts) will be hosted at Viraam to revive the tradition of classical music. Reknowned masteros of classical music will be invited from time to time to perform at the baithak. This month, the baithak will resound with a flute recital by Padma Vibhushan Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia ji, in presence of Padma Bhushan Pt. Rajan- Sajan Misra ji.

Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia is a rare combination of innovator and traditionalist. He has also composed music for Hindi films like Chandni, Darr, Lamhe, Silsila, Faasle, Sahibaan along with Pt. Shivkumar Sharma. Pt. Chaurasia has also collaborated with various world musicians in experimental cross-cultural performances and formed the fusion group Shakti.
