With increased urbanization, Dehradun’s sylvan charm has steadily been declining. In a move to salvage the situation, the government and some non government voluntary organizations like Citizens for Green Doon are joining hands to beautify Doon. District Magistrate BVRS Purshottam is spear heading the drive. Thanks to the frequent checks and enforcement by his team, the use of polythene bags has definitely come down in Dehradun. Most shopkeepers in the fear of being fined have totally stopped handing out plastic bags. After a survey by representatives of the government and non government agencies, the plans that have been proposed to give a facelift to the city include:

• Solar lighting around Dehradun’s iconic Clock Tower

• Plants on the road divider on Rajpur Road up till Astley Hall

• Creepers on lamp posts

• Fresh coat of coloured paint on the road dividers on the main roads

• Tree plantation on the empty land around shopping complexes

• Road side benches for pedestrians to rest

While the above cosmetic changes will serve to give a face lift to the city, the need of the hour is infrastructure development to meet the increased pressure on the city’s resources in the coming years.
